Xperia Z2 vs iPhone 5S

Sony is coming up with the successor of Xperia Z1 called the Z2. The changes are very few and this new device is coming out just to make sure they don’t lag behind their rivals. This is a top of the line device and the comparison with iPhone is inevitable. The iPhone 5S is an impressive device that boasts of some impressive specs and features. And then there is the Apple name associated with the iPhone that works towards boosting its sales as well. The iPhone 5S comes with a fingerprint scanner and a motion coprocessor that give it an edge over other devices. We take a look at how the Xperia Z2 stacks up against the iPhone 5S.

Xperia Z2 vs iPhone 5S

Both of these are very well designed devices. The built quality is top notch and the design is good to use. Both of them carry the design from their predecessors with minor changes. The Xperia Z2 has got glass on the front and back and then there is an aluminium stripe running around it. It is slightly slimmer than the Xperia Z1 but the length is a bit more due to the increase in display size. It is completely waterproof like the Z1 and Z and it comes with a camera key so you can use it to capture underwater photographs. The speakers above and below the display are loud and give a very nice stereo effect when you hold the device in landscape mode.

The iPhone 5S looks very much similar to the iPhone 5 except for a silver ring around the home key. This ring integrates the fingerprint scanner. The device is slimmer than the Z2 and is much smaller as well due to the relatively small display size. Handling the device with one hand is very easy due to the light weight and small size. Large part of the back is made out of aluminium which feels nice. The side is built out of metal as well and gives the device a solid feel. Both the devices are evenly matched here.

The Xperia Z2 comes with a full HD display that measures 5.2 inches. The LCD display comes with Sony’s Triluminous technology, which uses quantum dots to give you good colour replication. The display is bright which makes it easy to use outdoors. The gamma of the device isn’t very good and you lose on a lot of details due to the bright highlights. The viewing angles and contrast ratios are good, but not as good as you would find on an AMOLED display. The pixel density is a whopping 424 pixels per inch.

The iPhone on the other hand comes with a 4 inch IPS LCD display. The resolution is 640 x 1136 which gives it a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. This is a display density good enough for everyday use but high end android devices have taken the number game too far. The display has got superb viewing angles and the colours are replicated very well. The brightness can be varied across a wide range and is good for outdoor usage.

The Xperia Z2 comes with a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset that runs a quad core Krait 400 processor. The processor has a maximum clock speed of 2.3 GHz. It has an Adreno 330 GPU to handle the graphics and has got 3 GB of RAM. It can handle even the most resource hungry games and apps with ease. Apart from the internal storage, it also comes with an option to add external storage via micro SD card. Something that you won’t find on the iPhone.

The iPhone 5S has got an Apple A7 chip that is a 64 bit chipset. It runs a dual core processor and has also got a motion coprocessor. It supports Open GL 3.0 which allows the device to display some really high end graphics. While the processor is powerful to handle resource hungry games and apps, the coprocessor takes care of things that don’t require the power of the main processor. It is a low speed processor that receives data from various sensors and then uses the data to handle various device operations. The Wi-Fi and GPS are controlled by this coprocessor only so that power can be saved. Here, the Xperia Z2 has got its raw power to show with the latest and greatest hardware running under its sleek design against the smart hardware of the iPhone 5S. Another close match between the two devices.

You think things are simple here? Well, they are not. Read the numbers and you will say that the Xperia Z2 has got a better camera and that is it. The Z2 comes with a 20.7 megapixel camera with a large sensor and a lens with a large aperture of f/2.0 to allow for more light. It gives you some really stunning photographs in well-lit conditions and even in low light, the results aren’t exactly disappointing. It comes with Sony’s Exmor sensor to achieve this advantage. It allows for 4K video recording at 30 fps. You can also record full HD videos at 60 fps or semi HD video at 120 fps.

Each pixel has a size of 1.5 Ķm which results in crisp low noise images. The aperture is relatively larger at f/2.2. It also supports similar video modes as the Xperia Z2. It has got a smart flash system that has two LEDs of different colours. These LEDs fire at different intensities to take care of the white balance.

These devices are very powerful and the best these manufacturers have ever made. Both of them offer their share of benefits and it is up to you what device you pick. If you are looking for a large screen device with powerful hardware and high resolution camera, Xperia Z2 would suit you. If you need a smart device that can get things right without bothering you, get the iPhone.
